The Soundtrack To My Life

Sunday, 19 July 2015

A few days ago Holly tagged me to do a post talking about the Soundtrack To My Life. I jumped at the opportunity with glee and over the last few days I haven't been able to think about anything else. For me, this tag has made me realise that the music I listened to 10 years ago as a teen in my boyfriend's poster covered room is still the same stuff that we listen to in our shared flat today. And although I do have a couple of newer songs, it's the music I found in my teens that is still the most significant to me.

Chvrches - Gun
Let's start with a newer song on my playlist. My boyfriend told me to listen to Chvrches as I think he believed that the lead singer Lauren was my spirit animal and he was right! I love her outspokenness, style and ability to rock a leather jacket with aplomb. I picked this song in particular as it embodies a "don't tell me what to do" attitude that I love, while still being techie and fun.

The Postal Service - Such Great Heights
To me, this is the song of my college years. When my best friend and I lived together alone for the first time, it was a song that we had on constant repeat. We'd be getting ready for a night out and would be bouncing along and singing the quirky lyrics. My love for it was reinvigorated a couple of years ago when I saw them in Brooklyn for their 10-year anniversary tour (that is the most hipster sentence I will ever say).

Weezer - Say It Ain't So
Weezer is one of my all-time favourite bands. I love all of their 90's stuff. And even though retroactively I cringe at some of Rivers' sexist lyrics and his m'lady ways, I still can't help but love them. All of their songs take me back to being at school, going to house parties and just hanging out with my friends, and this one is just a personal favourite.

Descendents - Silly Girl
This song just makes me happy. It's very fast paced, fun and I can't believe it's 30 years old! It has a simple message of a guy just wanting to be around the "silly girl" that he loves and I think it's very sweet and something we can all relate to, right?

Biffy Clyro - BreatheHer
I wasn't sure whether to include this song. Biffy Clyro were once my favourite band. But you know how it goes, they changed, I changed and I rarely listen to them anymore. BreatheHer, however, is one of the few songs from them I still listen too. It's quiet, sweet and unlike a lot of usual Biffy stuff. It's just a lovely song. And fun fact, this song is one of the first videos I watched on YouTube like 9 years ago!

The Smiths - This Charming Man
I think everyone has that one song that when they hear it, it instantly uplifts them and puts them in a great mood and The Smiths "This Charming Man" does that for me. Again, it's a song that holds a lot of teenage nostalgia for me and it's one that I'll never tire of hearing.

Kath Bloom - Come Here
Holly included a song from Amelie (great choice Hols) so I thought I'd include a song from Before Sunrise, another gorgeously romantic film. This song just encapsulates the awkwardness of romance, liking someone and wanting to be with them. It's just so sweet. To get the full effect, I suggest watching this clip from the movie - here.

Inside Amy Schumer - Girl You Don't Need Makeup
I love this song! My boyfriend and I haven't been able to stop singing it for months! I think it's a really funny tongue-in-cheek song about something that really annoys me - men's dumb opinions about makeup.

I'm not going to tag anyone to do this specifically because I want everyone to do it! It's really fun for yourself to think about songs that mean something to you. So please do it and let me know so that I can check out your post.
