The Balm Meet Matte Hughes Liquid Lipstick review

I love myself a good liquid lipstick. When they are done right, I personally think they can't be beaten. So when The Balm released their new range of liquid lipsticks called Meet Matte Hughes I was giddy with excitement and when I saw some reviews talking about how amazing they were, I knew I had to get some.

Let's start with the shade range because this collection is seriously on point. There is eight altogether and I had a major Sophie's choice situation when deciding which ones to add to my basket. There is some lovely nude-ish shades, some perfect bright pinks and reds and there is also a little vamp-ness in there. There really is something for everyone.

I decided to go with Sentimental, a bright yet deeper than your run of the mill pink, which is a very "me" shade and Adoring, a vampy red, which is a little out of my comfort zone, but still a beaut. I have them photographed below and I think both shades are coming up a bit brighter in pictures that they look in IRL, but you get the gist. They are pretty!

Not only is the shade range a winner, but the formula is too. It smells delicious - a vanilla scent with a hint of mint. Yum! It's so light-weight and comfortable. And it's very opaque and matte when dried. They look amazing. I must say that Sentimental was the easier to apply, though. Adoring did a take a while to get even, probably because it's so dark, but once you get it on, it looks fab. I'm so impressed.

Unfortunately, this isn't a flawless product as it has one major failing - the packaging. I'm not the biggest fan of The Balm's packaging anyway. The whole 1950's pin-up just ain't me, but these have a serious engineering fail. It seems like they are missing a stopper at the top that removes excess product and keeps everything inside so that means it's messy AF. They leak very easily and the applicator is always overloaded with product. It's more than a little annoying.

Other than the terrible packaging (grumble, grumble), I think these are amazing. They have all the cadences of a liquid matte lipstick that I'd love. They aren't drying, the colours are striking, and they look amazing. The price is even shockingly good at €15! What more can I say? These are a peach!
